I got home for fall break yesterday and washed the BMW for the first time in months. It was really dirty to the point that people in the parking lot started writing bad words in the grime.
Just washed it and discovered a ton of scratches on the trunk and some fading in the rear quarter panels. My dad is going to help me use the buffer when he gets home. Included are some pictures where I try to show what’s wrong. I normally just wax and don’t polish but I feel this is appropriate.
The previous owners kept it waxed real well so washing it really makes it shine but I want it to look as good as it can.

lol, I would have been one of the mature souls drawing dicks on the back window.

I keep my windows pretty clean. The dicks were on the paint. Thankfully they didn’t scratch enough to stay.

I’d only put dicks on the windows, so they don’t scratch.
If they did, I would kill somebody...

How do you like it? My neighbor has a white 525i but I’ve never talked to him about it. My dad really likes the idea of an old 5-series as a weekend car, especially after seeing a really nice condition 533i at Cars & Coffee this past weekend.

Go get a claybar while you wait?
Post your done pics, red cars shine up the best, second only to black.

It’s a good cruiser and fun on twists (look up US 221 between Blowing Rock NC and Linville NC). Definitely a luxury car and not horribly fast. The 525i with the m50 is a good ballance between economy reliability and noise.

Is it any good for tall people? How’s the transmission? How much should a nice condition running E28/E34 be?

I have a 6’3” friend that fit remarkably well up front. Steering wheel could be hard to get in with but once you’re in you should be good.
The auto in the e34 is from GM and are generally pretty good. Easy enough to have work done to. I gave a Getrag manual that leaks minimally every few thousand miles. I just top it off at oil changes. Previous owner replaced the clutch and all the shifter bushings. It’s a bit notchy but still solid.
Pristine e34 is 5-8k tops. I bought mine for $2750 usd. That’s about what you should pay for a nice driver. Any less probably has problems but most parts and things are easy to fix.
E28s I’ve seen going for about 4-6k in driving condition. I’d personally go for a $2000 project. Or spend a little bit more and get an e24.

Thanks for the input. Last question, how is maintenance?

Not bad for a BMW. I frequently see them for sale with over 200,000 miles on them if that speaks to reliability.

Make sure you clay before you polish!!!
Be super duper careful with the buffer if it's your first time!!! And be super insanely careful if it’s a rotary!!!!!! Good luck!!

I love the E34. I love your E34. I need an E34.
If I had money, this would be in my driveway: https://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5230222064…
Welcome back to Raleigh (temporarily)!

Not that one. 207,000 miles, broken trim, and a faded info display (that says you need new brakes). Not to mention the very faded and scratched paint. $4000? More like 2k. I paid $2750 for mine and it’s heaps better. That one has been on for about a month now.

Have you seen that $1,500 540it for sale in Raleigh? Doesn’t look too terrible.

Now you’re talking. Haven’t seen it but it sounds like a winner.
